Population information & Statistics:

In 2007, we admitted 3977 animals.

Major breakthrough for SPCA Education of Pet Owners brings major improvements, in Sydney, Nova Scotia. In a community plagued with companion animal overpopulation, the SPCA has finally made some headway. The Cape Breton Branch is the busiest in the province and each year has to euthanize large numbers of cats and dogs. By comparison, the Halifax Metro shelter dealt with 2667 animals in the in 2004.

An education campaign emphasizing spaying and neutering pets and a fund set up to assist low income families to spay/neuter is credited with the lower volume of pets. Although they don't recieve funding for cats, felines make up 57% of the shelter population. the SPCA found 588 homes for animals left at their facilities. Unfortunately, they had to euthanize 783 animals due to lack of time and space to find them suitable accommodations.

In 1998-1999 the Cape Breton branch of the SPCA handled over 10,000 animals. Only 28% of these animals found appropriate homes, the rest had to be euthanized due to overcrowding. Approximately 40% of all puppies who come into the Cape Breton Shelter contract the deadly parvovirus. The mortality rate for this disease is incredibly high. when animals enter the shelter their auto immune system becomes suppressed. This makes the animals even more likely to develop illnesses.
